Who we are
Curlew Collective is a group of older women artists working in wild landscapes, particularly moorland, wetlands and peat bogs. Our work explores the relationship between women’s bodies, lived experience and the deep ecological time held within the land.
The collective brings together artists whose lives have been shaped by landscape, craft, unconventional rural childhoods and unusual creative paths. Through walking, gathering and working directly with natural materials, we create site-responsive sculpture, textiles and installations that respond to the places we work in.
Named after the curlew — a bird long associated with liminal landscapes, folklore and peatland, the collective is interested in thresholds: between myth and ecology, body and land, memory and environment. Through collaborative practice we aim to create work that listens to the land and honours the knowledge that comes with age and long relationships with place.
